Tuhl
2025A Love Story Between Chair and Table
Tuhl is a seating object that explores the relationship between chair and table. Few pieces of furniture are as closely linked in everyday use as the chair and the table. While each functions independently, they are commonly perceived as a complementary pair.
Tuhl addresses this tension and unites what inherently belongs together. The resulting form draws on the four-legged archetype of the chair, merging the backrest with a tabletop. In doing so, it reflects the typical height relationship between seat and table surfaces. By combining the functions of chair and table, Tuhl opens up new possibilities for use. It does not aim for perfection but rather seeks to reveal the underlying relationship between these two objects.

“I wanted to go beyond designing just another chair and instead create an object that embodies the dialogue between chair and table, revealing new possibilities of use.”

Better Together
The table and the chair exist in a functional relationship with one another. The table provides a surface for activities such as working, eating, or writing, while the chair offers the necessary support for the body to carry out these tasks comfortably. Together, they complement each other to create a comfortable and ergonomic environment.
They are often viewed as complementary elements that, when used in combination, enhance their overall utility and enable new forms of posture.

A New Relationship
By combining a table and a chair, Tuhl brings together a familiar relationship in a single object, opening up new ways of use. Beyond conventional sitting, it allows for alternative body postures, inviting the user to explore the interaction between the two elements.

Proportional Dialog
In the design of Tuhl, attention was drawn to the two elements that articulate the relationship between chair and table, the seat and the tabletop. They are connected by discreet aluminum tubes, creating a subtle contrast while clearly asserting themselves as the primary components of Tuhl. In addition, Tuhl is stackable, making it a practical and functional object for everyday use.

In the pursuit of the ideal form, a series of prototypes was meticulously developed. While exploring new possibilities, care was taken to preserve the conventional height ratio between table and seat, maintaining a sense of functional familiarity. Simultaneously, the archetypal four-legged structure of both chair and table was retained, serving as an important visual and conceptual link.
A Table for One
Tuhl unites chair and table in a single, self-contained object. It embodies the relationship between support and surface, inviting the user to explore new ways of interacting with space and posture. By combining these functions, Tuhl becomes both familiar and surprising, revealing the subtle dialogue that exists within a single piece of furniture.
