Vis-à-vis

Individual car traffic is a significant problem considering the necessary transformation of transportation. Many multi-ton vehicles often carry only one person and are used on average for just one hour a day, mostly for trips covering distances of five to ten kilometers.

Vis-à-vis is a public vehicle interior concept that prioritizes communal mobility and can be used for both manual and autonomous driving. The transformable interior creates an open communal space, inviting shared rides with others and utilizing the full potential of the vehicle.

Vis-à-vis is a design concept that challenges the norm in automotive design and is fully aligned with Polestar's brand motto, "Goodbye Normal."

When the vehicle is parked, one of two modes can be selected. One is the conventional mode where all seats face forward with manual or optional autonomous control, and the other is the autonomous lounge mode where the seats face each other, creating an open communal space.

“Car traffic nowadays means stress; there is a veritable street fight in car traffic, with everyone wanting to be faster than the other and showing little consideration for other road users. Vis-à-vis is a counter-concept and emphasizes the importance of communal mobility in light of a necessary traffic transition.”

Manual Mode

Lounge Mode

The seats consist of a rigid aluminum frame, with only the headrest being adjustable, ensuring a seamless transformation of the interior and preventing any collisions. The adjustability of the steering wheel allows for a comfortable seating position during manual driving. However, the intention is to drive in autonomous lounge mode to emphasize the shared driving experience.

The design of the seats is reminiscent of public transportation and prevents the adjustment of seating surfaces to eliminate potential inequities regarding space usage. Everyone has an equal amount of space.

Everything under control

The central control unit is located in the steering wheel of the vehicle. In addition to the smartphone, the travel destination can be entered here, modes can be switched, and other vehicle settings can be made. The welcome display in the center console also provides information and allows control.

For passengers sitting in the back, there is a detachable terminal on the back of the front seats' swiveling armrest. In lounge mode, control is ensured through this terminal.

Runs on native Android Automotive OS.

Design Framework

The design language of Vis-à-vis is based on the framing of essential components in the interior. All important elements are strongly emphasized, ensuring clear product-user communication. Unnecessary tactile and visual distractions have been largely avoided.

“It was important for me to establish a clear functional relationship and to distance myself from prevailing and short-lived trends.”
