Few pieces of furniture are as closely linked in everyday use as the chair and the table. While each functions independently, they are commonly perceived as a complementary pair. Tuhl addresses this tension and unites what inherently belongs together. The resulting form draws on the four-legged archetype of the chair, merging the backrest with a tabletop. In doing so, it reflects the typical height relationship between seat and table surfaces. By combining the functions of chair and table, Tuhl opens up new possibilities for use. The lamp highlights the importance of researching biomaterials and demonstrates that even already familiar materials can develop aesthetic qualities in new usage scenarios. The individual tubular segments of the lamp evoke the original use of the material as edible filled rolls, giving the object a metaphysical and formal aesthetic significance. The now light-filled rolls emit a warm, shimmering glow that reveals the true beauty of the material. The partially curved and deformed rolls reflect the material characteristics of dried paper, contrasting with the orderly arrangement of the segments. After drying and cutting the tubes to length, they were joined together with small strips. The wet material adheres to the dry parts and bonds with them after drying, creating a load-bearing structure. A fragile idea Since the rice paper can develop stress cracks during drying, it was extremely difficult to find a shape that wouldn’t crack during the drying process. Large surfaces are particularly prone to this, which is why the lamp was made from smaller tube segments. The Ulm Stool is excellent as it is, yet it holds much untapped potential that this project sought to develop, a meaningful transfer of its potential into a form that preserves and solidifies its identity. Building the Ulm Stool was a significant part of the design process for Ulminium. Constructing the stool provides insight into its structure and offers a glimpse into the thinking of its designers. For the stool's production, machine use is recommended; although it can be crafted by hand, this method is much more labor-intensive and time-consuming. An original construction plan for the stool is available upon request from the HfG Archive. It fills the product gap between short-term solutions such as forearm crutches, which are designed for six weeks of use, and long-term assistance systems, such as wheelchairs. The focus of the product is the minimization of consequential damages, which often occur in connection with conventional walking aids and thus result in further disorders of the musculoskeletal system, as well as a pleasant and practical handling, which enables the affected persons to actively participate in social life even with their walking disability. The assistance system can be transformed with only a few hand movements and thus allows an adaptation of the walking aid to the affected persons and their respective assistance needs. The 4 mm profile depth ensures the preservation of the profile even after several months of use. A plaster mould is used to reproduce the teacup and it’s based on a clay body slip.
